How Can You Love Yourself?
An NYU Tisch Short Film
Fall 2022
Role: Director/Writer/Producer
Filmmaker/Actor
How Can You Love Yourself? was my very first self-written, directed, and performed piece that I've ever done! This piece is especially indicative of where I was not only as an artist but as a young person during my sophomore year at NYU. The piece began as a passion poetry assignment for my voice and speech class at Playwrights Horizons Theater School that eventually became my first short film I created at school.
The piece is about unlearning the shame and self-doubt that society teaches us to carry—especially as women—and reclaiming the right to exist fully in one’s body. Through spoken word, physical imagery, and intimate self-reflection, How Can You Love Yourself? explores what it means to confront the “monsters” of comparison and insecurity, to turn the metaphorical "ropes" of restraint into "ribbons" of power and pride. It also reflects the broader cultural moment of the time, speaking directly to the body positivity and radical self-acceptance movements that were thriving across social media. At its core, it’s a love letter to self-acceptance and the courage it takes to see your body not as something to shrink, but as something sacred, expressive, and unapologetically yours.
